Strong reflected light off open water adds to direct sun on south-facing walls near the coast, and darker or more saturated colours take the brunt of it. Fade is not the same as failure, but it is often mistaken for one and leads to repainting sooner than the coating actually needs.
Strong blues, deep reds and dark greys show UV fade far more obviously than muted, lighter tones, because the pigment breakdown shows as a visible colour shift rather than a subtle dulling.
