Ground contact is the weak point on timber fencing
Posts set in or near the ground stay damp longest and pick up salt from splashback and groundwater more than the rest of the run. This is where rot and coating failure start on almost every coastal fence, regardless of how well the rest of the panels have been treated.
- Post bases inspected and treated as a priority over the panel faces
- Gravel boards used where practical to keep panels clear of standing water
- Metal post supports checked for corrosion at the ground line
