Wind-driven rain and why coating choice matters

Rain on an exposed coastal elevation rarely falls straight down. Gale-force gusts off the Solent drive it sideways and even upwards under eaves and window heads, finding gaps that would stay dry on a sheltered inland wall for decades.

Where sideways rain actually gets in

Upward and lateral water movement targets junctions a standard specification often treats as low risk: window head details, soffit-to-wall joints and the top edge of a rendered reveal. These need sealant and coating attention that a calmer inland brief would not call for.

Film build and flexibility both matter here

A coating with good film build sheds more water before it reaches the substrate, but it also needs enough flexibility to move with the building without cracking at the very joints that take the worst of the driven rain. Getting only one of those properties right leaves the other as the weak point.

Why a single wet day tells you little

Watching a wall in ordinary rain shows very little about how it performs in a westerly gale. We prefer to inspect after a named storm event where possible, because that is when tracking, staining and any hidden ingress actually show themselves.

Questions we are asked about this

Can paint alone stop wind-driven rain getting in?

No, coating is only part of it. Sealant at junctions and correctly detailed sills and copings matter just as much, and a good paint film cannot compensate for a failed joint underneath it.

Why does water appear on an inside wall only in certain weather?

That pattern usually points to wind-driven rain finding a specific junction only when wind direction and rainfall combine, rather than a general leak that would show in any weather.

Should render reveals get extra coats near the coast?

Often yes, particularly at the top edge where water tracks downward after driven rain, since that band takes more repeated wetting than the flat face of the wall.
