Coating systems

High-build masonry coating systems across Hampshire

Exposed elevations around Hampshire take wind-driven rain from one direction and sun from another. A high-build system helps — but only over a sound, stable substrate.

Homeowners and building owners with weathered render, pebbledash or painted masonry on exposed elevations.

What the system is

High-build and flexible masonry systems bridge hairline movement and add film thickness on textured surfaces. They demand sound, dry substrate: loose material removed, cracks cut and filled, and a stabilising treatment where the surface is chalky. Applied over failing render they will fail with it.

Preparation this system depends on

  • Elevation surveyed for hollow, blown or delaminating render
  • Surface cleaned down and organic growth treated
  • Chalky or friable surfaces stabilised before coating
  • Cracks cut out, filled and allowed to cure
  • Weather window planned around temperature and rainfall
  • Access method — tower, scaffold or MEWP — specified with the quote

Where it is usually specified

  • Rendered house elevations and gable walls
  • Pebbledash and roughcast previously painted
  • Boundary and retaining walls
  • Apartment block elevations and balcony returns
  • Commercial frontages and rear elevations
  • Garden rooms, outbuildings and garage blocks

Trade-offs worth knowing before you commit

  • Coating blown render locks in the problem — repair comes first
  • Textured surfaces consume far more material than smooth ones
  • Exposure direction changes both product choice and lifespan
  • Access cost can exceed the coating cost on tall elevations
  • Coastal salt and driving rain shorten maintenance intervals

Questions we get about masonry coatings

Is a high-build coating worth it on my Hampshire house?

On sound, textured, exposed render it adds film thickness and bridges hairline movement. On failing render it is money spent twice — we survey before recommending.

How long does a masonry system last around the Portsmouth and Southampton area?

Exposure decides it. Sheltered elevations go far longer than a coastal-facing gable. We give an honest interval rather than a headline figure.

Will you paint over cracks?

Hairline crazing can be bridged; structural or moving cracks are cut out and filled first, and anything suggesting movement gets flagged rather than covered.

Do you need scaffolding for a Hampshire elevation?

Sometimes. Two-storey work often runs from towers or a MEWP; complex or tall elevations need scaffold. Either way it is priced in the quotation.

Can you work in winter?

Only within the temperature and dampness limits of the product. We would rather move a Hampshire start date than apply a coating that will not form a film.

Do you treat organic growth first?

Yes. Algae and lichen are killed and washed down; coating over live growth simply feeds it under the film.

Send photographs of each elevation at your Hampshire property and we will tell you what needs repair before coating.

High-build coatings protect sound substrate in Hampshire; they do not rescue failing render.
