Masonry paint or silicone render coating?
Both protect a wall; they manage water very differently. Getting the choice wrong on a solid-wall property can trap moisture and cause the exact flaking you were trying to fix.
Conventional acrylic masonry paint
Cost-effective, widely colour-matched and well proven on sound modern render. It forms a film that resists rain but is less vapour-open than mineral or silicone alternatives.
Silicone-based coatings
Silicone systems are highly water-repellent while remaining vapour permeable, so a wall can dry outwards. They tend to shed dirt well, which matters on exposed, weather-facing elevations.
Older solid-wall property
Pre-cavity walls rely on being able to dry. Breathable mineral or silicone coatings suit them far better than a heavy plastic film that seals moisture inside the fabric.
Cost against service life
Silicone systems carry a higher material cost. On an exposed coastal elevation, the longer maintenance interval and reduced dirt pick-up usually justify it.

Is silicone render coating worth the extra?
On exposed or older breathable walls, generally yes. On sheltered modern render, standard masonry paint is often sufficient.
Can silicone coating go over old masonry paint?
Only if the existing coating is sound and compatible — chalky or flaking layers must be removed and stabilised.
Which lasts longer?
Silicone systems typically offer a longer maintenance interval, though preparation quality remains the biggest factor.
Will either stop damp?
Neither fixes a leak, bridged DPC or failed pointing — those are repaired first.
