What can and cannot change when decorating over intumescent

Intumescent coatings are tested and certified as a whole system, including any decorative topcoat, which means a colour change or a different finish is not simply a matter of picking a new colour and applying it. Understanding what the certification actually covers avoids specifying something that looks fine but invalidates the fire performance it relies on.

The topcoat is part of the tested system

Intumescent manufacturers test their coating with specific compatible topcoats included, and the fire performance certificate applies to that combination, not to the intumescent layer alone. Substituting an untested topcoat, even one that looks identical, is a real compliance risk regardless of how it performs decoratively.

What decorative flexibility actually exists

Within the range of manufacturer-approved topcoats there is usually a genuine choice of colour and sometimes sheen, which gives a specifier real scope to match a scheme without touching the fire performance. The constraint is choosing from that approved range, not colour matching being impossible.

Thickness cannot be adjusted for appearance

The intumescent layer's thickness is specified to achieve a stated fire rating and cannot be thinned to save material or built up further for a smoother look without invalidating that rating. A film thickness check against the specification is part of any respray or recoat, not an optional extra.

Recoating existing intumescent systems

Does a fresh coat of paint affect the fire rating?

It can, if the topcoat or its thickness falls outside what was tested as part of the certified system. Working within the approved specification avoids this.

What if the original intumescent product is no longer available?

The manufacturer's technical team can usually advise a certified alternative system, but this needs specifying properly rather than assumed compatible.
