Direct-to-metal, or DTM, primers are formulated to bond straight onto correctly prepared bare steel without a separate etch coat. On railings, gates and small steelwork they cut a stage out of the process without cutting corners, provided the metal is properly cleaned first.
On correctly prepared metal, modern DTM primers perform well for typical railings and gates. On heavily corroded structural steel we would still favour a traditional multi-coat build.
It is designed for bare metal. Where sound existing paint remains, we assess whether to feather it in or strip back further before priming.

Traditional systems often called for an etch primer followed by a separate corrosion-resistant primer. A good DTM primer combines adhesion and corrosion inhibition in one product, which is genuinely useful on smaller domestic ironwork where speed matters without sacrificing protection.
A DTM primer bonds to bare, clean metal, not to rust or old flaking paint. Wire brushing, grinding or blasting back to sound metal is still the step that determines whether the system holds, regardless of which primer is chosen.
On heavily corroded structural steel, or where a specification calls for a particular certified system, a multi-coat etch-and-build approach can still be the more thorough route, and we will recommend it over a faster DTM option where the condition of the metal justifies it.
