Getting decoration through handover with minimal snags

A long decorating snag list at handover is usually a sign of a rushed inspection earlier, not a rushed paint job. Catching issues internally before the client walk-round protects both the programme and the reputation of the finish.

Questions we are asked about this

Do you carry out your own snagging before the client walk-round?

Yes, always, and under the same lighting conditions the client will inspect under, not under work lights that hide problems.

How do you match touch-in paint months later?

By keeping a labelled sample of the exact batch used, and by recording the product, colour code and sheen against each room at completion.

What if snags are raised after we've left site?

We return to address genuine decorating defects within the agreed defects period, working from the dated photographic record where there's any question of cause.

The internal inspection before the client sees it

We walk every room under the same lighting the client will use for their inspection — not under work lights, which flatten out patchiness that grazing daylight or a low-angle downlight will reveal. Raking light along a wall at the right time of day catches roller stipple and flashing that a flat overhead light misses entirely.

  • Inspection carried out under final, not temporary, lighting
  • Raking light checked along long wall runs
  • Corners, reveals and behind-door areas checked, not just open wall

Common snags and how to avoid them before they happen

Touch-in colour mismatch, missed reveals behind opened doors, and paint on ironmongery are the recurring three. Keeping a labelled tin of the exact batch for touch-in, and masking ironmongery rather than cutting round it freehand, removes most of these before the walk-round rather than during it.

Documenting condition at handover

A dated photographic record of finished rooms, taken the day work completes, gives an honest baseline. If damage occurs afterwards from another trade or from occupation, that record separates our work from anything that happened after we left.

How we work on this

  • We self-inspect under final lighting conditions before any client walk-round.
  • We keep labelled touch-in samples matched to the exact batch used in each room.
  • We photograph finished rooms on completion to establish an honest condition record.

Ask us for our standard handover inspection checklist to run alongside your own snagging process.

A clean handover comes from inspecting properly beforehand, not from reacting quickly to a client's snag list.
