Why joints and brackets fail before the running lengths do

Gutter joints, union brackets and fixing points trap moisture and salt far more than the open length of a gutter run, so this is where corrosion nearly always starts. Painting a joint that is already thinned by rust from behind only delays the point at which it fails visibly, rather than stopping the failure itself.

Deciding between repainting and replacing a section

A probe test on a suspect joint tells you quickly whether the metal is sound enough to prepare and repaint, or thinned to the point where replacing that short section is the more honest recommendation, even if it costs more upfront than another coat of paint.

Can painting stop a gutter joint from leaking?

Not if the metal is already thinned by rust at that joint. Painting a sound joint helps prevent future corrosion, but it will not seal a joint that has already lost structural thickness.

How do I know if a downpipe needs replacing rather than repainting?

A probe test that finds soft, flaking metal or a hole once surface rust is removed is the clearest sign that section needs replacing rather than repainting over the same weakness.

Why do gutters near the sea corrode faster than inland ones?

Salt in the air settles on the metal and, like on railings, draws moisture to the surface persistently, which accelerates corrosion at joints and brackets well beyond what an inland gutter typically experiences.
