Colour fade and repaint intervals on the coast

Choosing a colour for a coastal property is partly an aesthetic decision and partly a maintenance one. Some pigments hold their tone for years in strong coastal light while others visibly shift within a couple of seasons, and that difference changes how soon the whole scheme will need attention.

Which pigments hold up and which do not

Organic pigments used in some strong reds, blues and yellows tend to fade faster under UV than inorganic pigments used in earth tones, greys and many blacks. On an inland wall the difference might take a decade to become obvious; in strong coastal light it can show within a few years.

Fade rarely happens evenly across a building

The same colour on a south-facing wall and a north-facing wall can visibly diverge in tone well before either needs repainting for protective reasons, which is worth planning for if you want the building to still look coordinated between full repaint cycles.

Setting a repaint interval that matches the choice made

If a client chooses a colour known to fade faster, it makes sense to plan a genuinely shorter repaint interval around that decision from the outset, rather than treating the resulting early fade as an unexpected problem with the paint itself.

Will a more expensive paint stop our chosen colour from fading?

A better-quality product with UV-stable pigments will slow fading, but the underlying pigment chemistry still matters more than price alone, so the colour choice itself remains part of the decision.

Can we test how a colour will fade before committing?

A sample panel left outdoors on the actual elevation for a season gives a far more honest picture than a swatch viewed indoors, and it is worth the wait if colour longevity matters to you.

Should north and south walls ever be painted slightly differently?

Some owners choose a marginally more UV-stable version of the same colour for the sun-facing side specifically to reduce visible divergence between elevations over time.
