A standard matt emulsion looks good on day one and marks the fastest of any finish under repeated contact. Moving to a washable matt or a mid-sheen at the points people actually touch, around light switches, door frames and shoulder height along the run, cuts the need for repeated touch-ups considerably.
Every time the front door opens, weather, grit and moisture come in with it. The immediate area around the door often needs a slightly different specification to the rest of the hall, particularly where a porch or vestibule is not present to take the worst of it first.
Most hallway wear sits in a band roughly waist to shoulder height, exactly where coats, bags and bike handlebars catch the wall. A painted dado or simply a tougher finish in that band, distinct from the wall above, hides marks that would otherwise show against a single flat colour.
A washable matt or mid-sheen emulsion on the walls, paired with a durable eggshell on skirtings and door frames, holds up far better than a standard matt finish under constant contact.
It does not have to be, but darker or patterned treatment in the most-touched band can disguise marks that would show clearly against a pale flat colour.
Sometimes, if the original product and colour batch are known and the wall has not faded. Where they are not, a full repaint usually gives a more even result than patch touch-ups.
