Decorating a veterinary practice

A vets is a clinical building with residents. Kennels, prep rooms and consult rooms all need hard, cleanable surfaces, and there are usually animals in the building overnight who cannot simply be moved out for the decorators.

Kennels, prep and consult rooms

Kennel runs and prep areas are hosed and disinfected constantly. They want a sealed, washable system carried down to a proper junction with the floor, not an emulsion that lifts at the first pressure wash.

  • Wall-to-floor junctions sealed so water cannot get behind the coating
  • Consult rooms finished to look calm rather than institutional
  • Reception treated as a public-facing space, not a clinical one

Animals on site

Odour matters more here than almost anywhere. We use low-odour water-based systems in occupied wings, work one area at a time and keep dust down so the animals in the next run are not disturbed.

Phasing around the list

Consults, ops and out-of-hours cover rarely stop together. We agree a room-by-room rota with the practice manager and hand each space back cleaned and usable at the end of the day.

3 questions we get about this building type

Is the paint safe around animals?
We use low-VOC water-based products in occupied areas and keep any stronger coating for spaces that are empty and can be ventilated before animals return.
Can the kennel block be done in stages?
Yes, and it usually should be. Half the runs at a time keeps the practice functioning.
How long before a hosed-down area can be washed again?
We will give you the product's full cure time in writing — it is normally longer than the touch-dry time, and washing early is what causes early failure.

Next step

Tell us which wings can be emptied and when, and we will build a staged programme.
