Radiators, pipework and skirtings are the parts of a room most often finished poorly, painted around rather than removed, and covered in years of touch-up coats that never quite match. Getting them right usually means deciding early whether the radiator comes off the wall or stays, because that choice shapes everything after it.

Deciding whether the radiator comes off

Removing a radiator gives access to paint the wall and skirting behind it properly, and to finish the radiator itself on a bench rather than in an awkward, cramped position. It is not always necessary or worth the extra time and plumbing coordination, so we assess case by case rather than defaulting to either approach.

Heat-resistant paint on radiators is not optional

Standard wall or furniture paint will yellow and fail quickly under a radiator's operating temperature. A specific radiator enamel or heat-tolerant finish is worth using even on a quick touch-up, because the wrong product noticeably discolours within a single heating season.

Pipework and the skirting junction

Exposed pipework running along a skirting is often the scruffiest detail in a room, painted inconsistently over the years in whatever was left in the tin. We treat pipework as its own small job — cleaned back, primed appropriately for the metal, and finished to match the skirting rather than left as an afterthought.

Questions we are asked about this

Do radiators need to come off the wall to be painted properly?

Not always. We assess whether pulling the radiator forward on its bracket gives enough access, and only recommend full removal where the wall behind genuinely needs attention or you specifically want it done.

Can you paint radiators without draining the heating system?

If the radiator stays connected and in place, yes, we work around it. Full removal for a bench finish does involve isolating and draining that radiator, which we coordinate with you beforehand.

Why does painted pipework look patchy after a while?

Ordinary paint often does not key well to metal pipework and can flake or discolour with heat cycling. Using the right metal primer and a heat-tolerant topcoat gives a far more even, lasting result.
