Garage door painting
Garage door painting can refresh a sound existing door without replacing it. First identify whether the door is timber, coated metal or a moving roller assembly, then assess the old finish. The quote should cover preparation and a compatible coating, not mechanical repairs or insulation work.
A garage door is not a front door
A broad garage door has a different working surface from a composite entrance door. Panel joints, handles, hinges and the way it travels all affect the painting method. A timber up-and-over door is not specified in the same way as a factory-coated steel one, and roller doors need particular care around movement. Describe the type when you enquire. Garage door painting covers the decorative finish on a suitable existing garage door rather than a new door, an entrance doorset or a replacement operating system.
Metal doors: clean, prepare and prime
Metal garage doors are degreased, treated for corrosion, primed and finished. The important distinction is between sound coating that can be prepared and loose material that should not be buried beneath another layer. Bare or affected areas need the appropriate preparation and primer for the metal and finish system. A door that looks acceptable from the drive can still have failed coating at lower edges and joints, so close photographs help establish what a survey needs to inspect.
Timber doors and exposed edges
On timber, the condition of the wood matters as much as the chosen colour. Flaking paint and weathered areas need assessment, with bare surfaces prepared and primed for an exterior timber system. Paint is not a cure for unsound wood or a failing joint. Discuss repairs separately where needed and make clear whether the edges and surrounding frame are part of the package. Our exterior painting service covers the broader joinery around the opening, while this enquiry keeps the garage door itself as the main item.
Spray or brush application
Spraying can give an even finish to a suitable prepared door, but the available space and protection may make another method more practical. Nearby cars, paving, glazing and brickwork need shielding from spray mist. Wind and surface conditions influence outdoor application, and the manufacturer’s drying requirements determine when the door can be used. A garage-door respray should therefore be planned around access, not sold as a colour change that takes no preparation or causes no interruption.
Hardware, travel and roller doors
Handles, locks, hinges, tracks and operating equipment should remain functional and should not simply be coated with the decorative face. Paint build-up at contact points can interfere with movement. Roller garage doors also have interlocking sections and guide clearances, so ask for a separate assessment rather than treating the curtain as one fixed sheet. Our roller shutter painting page addresses that moving-assembly distinction. If the mechanism is faulty, a door specialist should deal with it before decorating is considered.
Colour without unsupported effects
A colour such as agate grey can be discussed against the surrounding windows, masonry and trim, with the actual finish agreed before application. A colour name is not a coating specification: adhesion, exterior use and compatibility still need checking. The service is a decorative coating, not faux timber graining, insulation paint or spray-foam insulation, and the product is selected for the surface rather than a particular retail brand. Nor does a decorative epoxy or enamel name establish suitability for every garage door. The identified surface determines the proposed system.
Send a useful garage-door enquiry
For a free quote, include photographs of the whole door, lower edge, frame and any flaking or corrosion. Add the material if known, approximate size, location and whether the garage must be accessible during the work. Mention adjoining doors or trim if you want them priced separately. Dynamic Decorating provides painting and spray finishing across Hampshire and Dorset; a survey and agreed scope establish whether this door is suitable. The garage and outbuilding page can help distinguish door decoration from a larger building repaint.

Common questions
Can you spray garage doors?
A compatible coating can be sprayed onto a properly prepared door where access and protection allow. Material, existing coating and the door’s movement decide the method.
Does garage door painting include fixing the mechanism?
No mechanical repair is implied. Faulty tracks, locks, motors or hinges should be assessed by a suitable door specialist separately.
Can you spray roller garage doors?
A roller assembly needs a specific assessment of its coating, guides and moving clearances. It should not be priced as though it were a fixed metal panel.
