Cladding spraying
Cladding can often be painted or spray coated, but the material, existing finish and condition decide what is suitable. We coat suitable cladding; installation, replacement and repair are work for a cladding specialist. Start with the surface rather than the colour, and agree the preparation first.
Can cladding be painted?
Sound timber weatherboarding and suitable previously coated metal panels can be candidates for repainting. The important question is whether the proposed system will adhere to that particular surface and remain suitable for its exposure. A finish that works on timber is not automatically suitable for a factory-coated panel. Describe the material when enquiring, and include photographs of the overall elevation and close views of failed paint. If the material cannot be identified, that needs resolving before any coating is selected.
A frontage finish, not a building-envelope repair
Cladding painting changes a finish; it does not establish whether the wall behind it is watertight, structurally sound or correctly ventilated. Water entering at joints, defective flashings and damaged panels need the relevant building specialist. Covering a defect with paint can obscure the evidence without addressing the cause. Where damp is present, separate the investigation from the decorating specification. A coating should be considered only after the cause and the condition of the underlying construction have been understood.
Preparation for timber weatherboarding
Exterior timber needs a different approach from smooth metal. Loose paint must be removed, weathered areas assessed and bare wood primed with a system suited to the substrate. Board edges and end grain deserve attention because they behave differently from the broad face. A new colour will not disguise unsound wood indefinitely. The extent of preparation should be recorded in the quote so that a simple colour change is not confused with a substantial restoration or a replacement package.
Previously coated metal and adhesion
On metal panels, cleaning, removal of loose coating and treatment of exposed areas come before the decorative finish. Existing factory finishes can vary, so compatibility should not be assumed from their appearance. An adhesion check and the coating manufacturer’s preparation requirements help establish the proposed process. Where corrosion or coating failure is widespread, the survey should distinguish a repaintable surface from a panel needing other attention. Our specialist coatings service explains why the substrate and intended use govern the system.
Spraying around a trading frontage
Spray application is useful on broad surfaces, but access, wind, neighbouring property and nearby vehicles all matter. Windows, signs, door furniture and adjoining finishes need protection; entrances need an agreed safe route. The work area should be separated from customers rather than relying on a warning beside an active sprayer. Dynamic Decorating supplies RAMS for commercial decorating and offers phased and out-of-hours working. The specific arrangement for a frontage is agreed against its condition, position and trading requirements.
Cleaning and quotation scope
Cladding cleaning and spraying need a quote based on the surface and preparation required. Area alone does not describe the work: height, access, contamination, old coatings and the amount of masking can alter the preparation substantially. Ask for a quote identifying which elevations and details are included, what must be cleaned first and which repairs are outside the painting package. Include any available panel or previous coating information. That helps establish a suitable finish and a clearly defined preparation package before the work is scheduled.
Where another service is the better fit
For rendered or masonry elevations, exterior painting is the more relevant starting point. For internal hygienic walls, a paint finish is not a substitute for sheet cladding where the construction requires it. Installing cladding over cladding is also a building-envelope question rather than a spraying method. Dynamic Decorating covers Hampshire and Dorset for painting, spray finishing and specialist coatings; an enquiry establishes whether the surface is suitable for a coating before a programme or coating is agreed.

Common questions
Can you spray paint cladding rather than brush it?
Spraying can suit a compatible, prepared surface where containment and access are practical. The material and existing finish still govern the coating choice; spraying alone does not solve adhesion problems.
Can cladding cause damp?
Damp can relate to the condition or design of a wall system. Painting is not a diagnosis or a repair for leaks, trapped moisture or defective ventilation; investigate the cause first.
Can you put cladding over cladding?
That is an installation and building-design decision, outside the painting work. A suitable specialist should assess the construction rather than treating another layer as preparation for paint.
