Decorating a nursery or early years setting

Nurseries barely close, and the people using the building are the least able to tolerate dust and fumes. That makes product choice and sequencing more important than anything else about the job.

Nurseries and early years settings decorated by Dynamic Decorating in Hampshire

Product choice comes first

Low-odour, low-VOC water-based systems are the only sensible option in an occupied early years setting. Anything stronger belongs in a closed room with time to ventilate and cure before children return.

  • Low-VOC systems throughout occupied areas
  • Full cure time allowed before a room is handed back
  • Wipeable finishes at child height where hands and paint go

One room at a time

Rooms are usually taken singly, with the group relocated for the day. We work to the closure agreed with the manager, clean down thoroughly and reinstate furniture before we leave.

Safeguarding and tidiness

Operatives sign in, work in a segregated area and keep all tools, blades and materials off the floor and locked away. There is no acceptable level of untidiness in a nursery.

  • DBS-checked operatives on site
  • No tools or materials left accessible at any point
  • Daily clean-down before the setting reopens

3 questions we get about this building type

Do we have to close the nursery?
Rarely the whole setting. One room at a time, with the group moved for the day, works for most nurseries.
How long until children can use the room?
With a low-odour water-based system and reasonable ventilation, usually the next morning. We will confirm against the product data sheet.
Can you paint murals or feature walls?
We can prepare and coat feature walls and blocked colour. Illustrative murals are usually better handled by a specialist artist.

Next step

Tell us your room rota and we will decorate around it without closing the setting.
