Decorating a dental or medical practice

A practice is judged on how clean it looks before a single word is spoken. The difficulty is that the surfaces which need to look clinical are also the surfaces being wiped with disinfectant several times a day, and the rooms cannot be closed for a week.

Surfaces that survive disinfectant

Repeated wiping with alcohol and chlorine-based cleaners strips ordinary matt emulsion within months. Clinical areas want a tight, low-porosity film that can be cleaned hard without burnishing, and a coving detail that does not trap dirt at the junction.

  • Scrubbable coatings in surgeries, sluices and treatment rooms
  • Junctions and cove lines sealed rather than simply painted over
  • Softer, warmer finishes kept for waiting and reception areas

Odour and air quality

Solvent smell in a waiting room is a problem in a way it is not on a building site. We specify low-odour water-based systems for occupied clinical space and keep anything stronger for evenings or closed days.

Working around the clinic list

Most practices give us one or two surgeries at a time. We agree which room is out of use on which day, work to that, and hand it back cleaned and reinstated so the next list can run.

  • Room-by-room handover rather than a whole-floor shutdown
  • Chairs, cabinetry and equipment sheeted and left connected
  • Evening and weekend working where the list cannot move

3 questions we get about this building type

Can you decorate a surgery overnight?
Often yes. A single treatment room prepped and coated in an evening can be back in use the next morning with a water-based system, provided the room can be ventilated.
Will the paint stand up to clinical cleaning?
Only if it is specified for it. We use scrubbable systems in clinical areas and tell you plainly where a standard emulsion would be a false economy.
Do you work around equipment that cannot be moved?
Yes. Chairs, compressors and wall-mounted units are sheeted and masked in place; we do not ask you to disconnect anything.
