Interior vs exterior paint, what actually differs

Interior and exterior paints are not the same product in different tins. They are formulated to survive completely different conditions, and using one where the other belongs leads to early failure that no amount of extra coats will fix.

Binder chemistry and flexibility

Exterior paints use binders formulated to remain flexible across a wide temperature range, allowing the film to expand and contract with the substrate as it heats in sun and contracts overnight without cracking. Interior binders are optimised for a stable indoor environment and don't need that flexibility, so they are typically formulated for hardness, washability and a smoother finish rather than for surviving thermal movement. This difference in flexibility is also why an exterior coating can look and feel slightly softer to the touch than a hard interior eggshell, which is a deliberate trade-off rather than a fault in the product.

UV resistance and pigment stability

Sunlight breaks down pigments and binders over time, which is why exterior paints include UV-stable pigments and additives that resist chalking and fading. Interior paint has no need for this protection because it never sees direct UV exposure, so its pigments are chosen for colour accuracy and coverage rather than for resisting sunlight, which is exactly why interior paint used outside fades and chalks quickly.

Moisture and breathability

Exterior walls need to manage moisture moving both ways, keeping driving rain out while allowing trapped moisture within the wall to escape as vapour. Exterior masonry paints are formulated with this breathability in mind, particularly on older solid-wall properties. Interior paints are not designed with this two-way moisture management, and applying them outside can trap moisture behind the film, leading to blistering and premature failure. This is one reason a solid-wall Victorian terrace can suffer damp problems after a well-meaning repaint with the wrong product, even though the paint itself looked fine for the first season or two.

Why you must not use interior emulsion outside

Interior emulsion lacks the UV stabilisers, flexibility and biocides needed to survive weathering, so it degrades within a season or two when used outdoors, often chalking, fading or peeling far faster than an exterior system would. It also lacks the fungicidal additives that exterior paints include as standard to resist algae and mould growth in damp, shaded conditions, which is a common problem on north-facing elevations.

Correct exterior systems for different substrates

Masonry paint, whether smooth or textured, is formulated for render and brick and provides the flexibility and breathability those substrates need. Exterior woodwork needs a system built around a primer, undercoat and a weatherproof topcoat, or a modern one-coat exterior system designed for the purpose, both of which resist UV and moisture far better than an interior equivalent. Metalwork such as railings and gutters needs a rust-inhibiting primer followed by an exterior metal finish, since interior metal paints are not formulated to resist corrosion in exposed conditions.

What happens when the wrong system is used

Beyond simple fading, using an interior product outdoors commonly leads to early flaking as the film becomes brittle and cannot cope with thermal movement, and to mould or algae growth in shaded areas because the fungicidal protection is missing. Correcting this usually means a full strip back to a sound substrate, which costs considerably more than specifying the correct system from the outset.

Where the two systems meet, doors, sills and thresholds

Some elements sit right on the boundary between interior and exterior conditions, and these are the details most often finished with the wrong product. A front door faces full weather on the outside but a stable indoor environment on the inside, so it is common, and correct, to use an exterior system on the outer face and an interior finish on the inner face of the same door. Window sills and thresholds are similarly exposed to driving rain and condensation even though they sit inside a room, so these areas often benefit from a more moisture-resistant interior product or a dedicated sill paint rather than a standard wall emulsion carried straight over them.
